Alexandria Naval Unknown Soldier Memorial, Alexandria
The Alexandria Naval Unknown Soldier Memorial is a public monument dedicated today to Egyptian naval personnel who died in service and were never individually identified. Set near the waterfront, it links remembrance with the Mediterranean and Egypt’s maritime history. The site also plays a role in modern naval tradition, especially on October 21, Egyptian Navy Day, which commemorates the 1967 sinking of the Israeli destroyer Eilat.
The monument was not originally created as a military memorial. It began as a tribute to Khedive Ismail, the 19th-century ruler associated with major modernization projects in Egypt. Its design was inspired by Rome’s Vittoriano, with a semi-circular marble colonnade giving it a strong Italian character. At its centre once stood a bronze statue of Khedive Ismail by Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica.
The memorial also reflects Alexandria’s once-large Italian community, which helped shape the city’s architecture, trade, and cultural life. After the 1952 Egyptian Revolution, the royal statue was removed, and the site became a memorial to the unknown naval soldier. Today, its appeal lies in this layered identity: royal monument, Italian-inspired landmark, and symbol of Egyptian naval pride.
