Alexandrowka (Little Russia), Potsdam

Alexandrowka (Little Russia) is a unique and charming village located in the heart of Potsdam, Germany. The village consists of 14 farms and a beautiful Russian Orthodox church. The village was established in 1826 as a Russian colony in honor of Tsar Alexander I after a cordial alliance was formed between Russia and Prussia.

The village was initially inhabited by twelve Russian singers and their families who were provided with Biedermeier furniture, gardens, and stables with cows. The village was designed by an Italian architect and has a unique style that has managed to retain its Russian heritage and charm. The inhabitants of Little Russia were subject to specific rules, which included not being able to sell or rent the properties, and the deed could only be transferred to a male heir.

Despite the passing of time, Little Russia has managed to maintain its historic significance and uniqueness. It remained in the hands of the Russian families until the last descendant, a member of the Schischkoff family, died in 2008. After Germany's reunification in 1990, most of the houses became private properties, but they could not be altered in any way as they were designated as historic monuments. In 1999, Little Russia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Today, Little Russia is a popular tourist destination that has been restored to its original beauty. The gardens have been replanted, and visitors can indulge in Russian treats at the garden cafe and teahouse. Additionally, there is a museum in one of the empty houses that showcases the history of the village and features artifacts and furniture from the time when the singers lived there.

Sanssouci Park is a unique Potsdam landmark that occupies 290 hectares in the heart of the city. The Park is named after the Sanssouci Palace that it surrounds, which in turn takes its name from the French phrase "sans souci", which means carefree, and implies that the palace was designated as a place of fun, rather than a seat of power.
