Beneficent Congregational Church, Providence
The Beneficent Congregational Church, also known as the "Round Top Church," was established in 1743, having originated as a separatist faction from the First Congregational Church on the east side of the Providence River. In 1809, the present brick structure was constructed; it then underwent significant Greek Revival-style renovations in 1836, notably featuring the addition of robust Doric columns and a prominent dome. The dome's design is reminiscent of the Massachusetts State House, reflecting the influence of classical architecture.
A substantial $30,000 donation from textile entrepreneur Henry J. Steere funded these enhancements, including the installation of an opulent chandelier adorned with 5,673 pieces of Austrian crystal. Originally gilded with gold leaf, the dome's covering suffered weather-related deterioration over time. In 1987, the congregation opted to replace it with durable copper sheeting, which has since developed a distinctive green patina.
Beyond its architectural significance, Beneficent Congregational Church has played a pivotal role in social justice initiatives. Today, it continues to serve as a community hub, hosting worship services, educational programs, and cultural events.
