First Universalist Church, Providence
With its doctrine of universal salvation, the First Universalist Church has been a significant presence since its founding in 1821. Established through the efforts of Reverend John Murray, often regarded as the founder of American Universalism, the congregation's mission focuses on building a community rooted in the Gospel of Christ through worship, study, and fellowship.
In 1872, the congregation moved to its current sanctuary, a Gothic Revival structure designed by local architect Edwin L. Howland. This building, characterized by its brick façade and pointed arches, reflects Howland's interpretation of Gothic architecture, emphasizing form and material over elaborate decoration. The interior maintains much of its original design, featuring broad pointed arches supported by slender columns and some of the oldest American-made stained glass windows in the country.
In 1977, the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and role in the religious history of Providence. Today, the church continues to serve as a place of worship and community engagement, embracing its mission of inclusivity and spiritual growth.
