Grace Episcopal Church, Providence

Grace Episcopal Church is a major example of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture. Its congregation was established in 1829 and initially worshipped in a converted theatre. The present church, designed by Richard Upjohn and completed in 1846, is considered the first asymmetrical Gothic Revival church in the United States. Dark stone walls, pointed windows, an offset tower and a tall spire create a distinctive outline.

Inside, pointed arcades lead toward a chancel enlarged in 1912 by architect Ralph Adams Cram. Carved woodwork, a vaulted timber roof, a large pipe organ and painted decoration give the nave a strong sense of height. More than 15 stained-glass windows date from 1846 to 1929. Many were created as personal memorials, and several include portraits based on photographs, detailed flowers and scenes connected to the lives of parish members.

The church continues to serve an active Episcopal congregation and has a long association with choral and organ music. A modern pavilion, completed in 2017, is connected to the historic sanctuary by a small passage. Its glass façade, copper framework and open courtyard provide a clear visual contrast with the heavy stone church while repeating Gothic forms through pointed arches and a steeply pitched roof.
