Alma Temple, Denver

Alma Temple, Denver

The Alma Temple, located at the western edge of Capitol Hill in Denver, is a striking example of Greek Revival architecture, characterized by its grand façade featuring eight Corinthian columns. Topped by the call letters "KPOF," this historic building is closely associated with The Pillar of Fire International, a church and radio station with deep roots in Denver's religious history.

The Pillar of Fire International was founded in 1901 by Alma Bridwell White, a figure who played a controversial role in American religious history. While White was an advocate for women's emancipation, she also held and promoted anti-Catholic, antisemitic, and anti-immigrant views-stances that have since been disavowed by the church she established. The church's radio station, KPOF 910 AM, began broadcasting in 1928 and remains a significant aspect of the temple's identity.

The construction of the Alma Temple, overseen by John H. Kubitz-a former mining engineer converted by White-was a labor of love carried out by church members and volunteers. Begun in 1923, the temple was not completed until 1937 when its grand opening was celebrated with the attendance of Denver Mayor Benjamin Speer and Alma White herself. The temple was designed by the Denver architectural firm Marean & Norton, known for their work on other Greek Revival structures in the nearby Civic Center. The building’s modern frame, constructed from steel and reinforced concrete, is clad in pale Turkey Creek sandstone quarried near Pueblo.

Today, Alma Temple continues to serve as a place of worship while also functioning as a cultural venue. It has been used for various performances, including being the longtime home of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, making it a notable landmark in both Denver’s religious and cultural landscapes.
