Aquarium and Natural History Museum, Krakow

Aquarium and Natural History Museum, Krakow

Situated at the heart of Krakow's Old Town and adjacent to Wawel Castle, you'll discover the Aquarium and Natural History Museum. Housed within an architecturally distinctive building, this destination is a must-see while in Krakow. Amidst the historical structures that grace the Old Town, this museum, brimming with extraordinary marine life, offers a delightful and unexpected experience.

Collectively, the Aquarium and National History Museum showcase a diverse array of over 130 exotic fish and marine organisms sourced from around the world. Beyond this, you can also marvel at rarely-seen amphibians and reptiles. Encompassing an expansive 1600 square meters, the Aquarium stands as Poland's most remarkable establishment of its kind.

The exhibits extend beyond marine life, encompassing critically endangered terrestrial species from various corners of the globe, finding a secure haven here. The recent addition of an insectarium is certain to captivate the attention of young visitors, if the captivating animals haven't already done so.

A standout among Natural History Museums worldwide, the woolly rhinoceros is a source of envy. Discovered in 1929 in remarkably preserved condition due to a combination of salt, oil, and clay at the site, this creature thrived in the Palearctic ecozone. Measuring 12 feet in length and 3 feet in height, it boasted a dense, lengthy coat of hair. The prevailing belief is that this rhinoceros species became extinct due to the sudden climatic shifts during the so-called Ice Age.
