Aquarium of Genoa, Genoa
Opened in 1992, the Aquarium of Genoa presents an extended route through 70 tanks housing over 12,000 animals from 600 species. The sequence begins with large-scale marine environments that recreate ecosystems from tropical, temperate, and polar seas, where dolphins, sharks, penguins, jellyfish, seals, manatees, and Antarctic species appear in full aquatic display. Coral reef habitats show dense clusters of fish and invertebrates, while the manatee tank remains a rare sight in Europe. The Cetacean Pavilion, designed with open-air basins on two levels, focuses on species native to the Pelagos Sanctuary, including eight types of cetaceans visible in constant motion above and below the waterline.
The path continues aboard Nave Italia, a converted vessel that now houses the Biodiversity Pavilion with 19 tanks focused on Mediterranean and Madagascan lifeforms. At the end of this section, a large touch basin allows for close contact with stingrays. Nearby, the steel-and-glass Biosphere encloses a tropical forest with over 150 plant and animal species, including parrots and scarlet ibis. The route also includes displays of amphibians, land and river reptiles, and hummingbirds, all arranged across 90 distinct ecosystems. The experience concludes with the Bigo lift, a panoramic structure rising 40 meters to offer a complete overhead view. The itinerary is structured as a gradual transition through climate zones and habitats, guiding the experience naturally from one environment to another. Rolli Palaces Walking Tour
At one point, back in 1576, when the Republic of Genoa was riding high on money, power, and confidence, the city faced a practical question: where do you put visiting kings, princes, and ambassadors? Genoa’s answer was very on brand. Instead of building one grand royal palace, they turned the entire local aristocracy into a hospitality network. The result was the lists of the public lodgings of... view more
