Hamilton Arts Council, once widely known as Arts Hamilton, has supported the local creative community since the early 1970s. Over time, the organization adopted the name Hamilton Arts Council to better reflect its role as a regional service body. It is not a gallery with permanent exhibitions. Instead, it works behind the scenes to support artists and arts groups across the area.

Today, the council mainly acts as a support network. It shares information about grants and funding, offers professional advice, and creates opportunities for artists to connect with each other and with institutions. It helped establish the Hamilton Arts Awards, which are now officially managed by the municipality, while the council continues to promote and support the program.

Public art and professional development are still part of its work. The council encourages murals and other creative projects in shared spaces and runs workshops, initiatives, and online platforms that help artists grow their careers. Through these efforts, the Hamilton Arts Council remains an important part of how the local arts community is organized and supported.
