You Me Gallery, Hamilton

You Me Gallery, Hamilton

You Me Gallery opened in May 2003 as a project founded by artist and curator Bryce Kanbara. Created as an alternative to more traditional commercial galleries, it focuses on independent, experimental, and community-based art. The gallery has played an important role in shaping the local arts scene and was instrumental in starting the monthly James Street North Art Crawl, held on the second Friday of each month.

Exhibitions change about every month and feature painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and mixed media. The gallery often presents local and Japanese Canadian artists, with shows that explore social themes, identity, and personal expression. Over time, it has become a consistent part of the area’s creative scene.

Inside, the space is simple and adaptable, with white walls and open floors that can be rearranged for each exhibition. During opening nights and Art Crawl evenings, the space feels lively and informal, and visitors can often speak directly with the artist or curator. It offers a clear view of how one dedicated gallery supports the local arts community.
