ArtScience Museum, Singapore
The ArtScience Museum stands as a pioneering institution globally, uniquely marrying the realms of art, science, culture, and technology. While it plans to house a permanent collection at the ArtScience Gallery, its primary focus lies in presenting traveling exhibitions curated by other museums.
The museum's architectural design draws inspiration from the elegant form of a lotus flower and is credited to the renowned architect Moshe Safdie. Often referred to as "The Welcoming Hand of Singapore" by Sheldon Adelson, the chairman of Las Vegas Sands, the museum's structure features a central round base and ten extensions resembling "fingers." Each of these "fingers" serves as distinct gallery spaces, illuminated naturally through skylights at their tips, contributing to sustainable lighting for the gracefully curved interior walls.
Spanning a total area of 50,000 square feet (6,000 square meters), the ArtScience Museum offers a diverse range of gallery spaces, showcasing combined art and science, media and technology, as well as design and architecture themes.
Within its permanent exhibits, visitors can explore objects that symbolize achievements in both the arts and sciences across various ages. Examples include Leonardo da Vinci's Flying Machine, a Kongming Lantern, and a cutting-edge robotic fish. The museum made its debut with an exhibition featuring a collection from the Belitung shipwreck cargo and Tang dynasty treasures, meticulously discovered and preserved by Tilman Walterfang of Seabed Explorations NZ Ltd.
