Belinsky Library, Yekaterinburg
The Sverdlovsk Regional Universal Scientific Library named after V. G. Belinsky, often called the Belinsky Library, is the main public and research library of Yekaterinburg and the largest in the Sverdlovsk region. It was founded in 1899 and named after the literary critic Vissarion Belinsky. As the city grew into an industrial and cultural centre of the Urals, the library grew with it, becoming an important place for study, research, and public education.
Today, the library holds more than two million items. About 1.5 million of these are printed books, along with tens of thousands of journals and newspapers, some dating back to the late nineteenth century. The collection also includes many foreign-language publications. A notable part is the rare books and manuscripts section, which holds over 50,000 items, including early printed books, first editions of major Russian writers, and regional publications related to the history of the Urals.
The Belinsky Library also offers electronic and digital resources, including academic databases and digitised local history materials. The library is housed in a historic building with a modern extension added in the early 2000s, and includes reading rooms, work areas, and spaces for lectures and book events.
