Sol Koffler Graduate Student Gallery, Providence
The Sol Koffler Graduate Student Gallery is the main exhibition space for graduate work from the Rhode Island School of Design. Its changing programme presents art and design from departments such as painting, photography, textiles, ceramics, furniture design, architecture and digital media. Most exhibitions remain on view for two or three weeks, giving visitors new material to encounter throughout the academic year.
Shows may focus on one department or bring several disciplines together around a shared theme or question. Displays can include photographs, drawings, architectural models, furniture, fabric, sculpture, video and experimental installations. Recent photography exhibitions, for example, have extended beyond printed images to explore performance, movement, data, memory and landscape.
Graduate students also participate in curatorial decisions and work with the Campus Exhibitions team and Student Gallery Board. Selecting pieces, planning layouts and installing work provide practical experience in preparing professional exhibitions. The gallery occupies the first floor of the Center for Integrative Technologies and is currently listed as open daily from noon to 5 p.m. Because exhibitions rotate frequently and short installation periods may occur between shows, visitors should check the current programme before arriving.
