Bethel Lutheran Church, Madison

Bethel Lutheran Church, Madison

Bethel Lutheran Church was founded in 1855 as the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Madison. It formally adopted the name Bethel Lutheran Church in 1896. Its current Gothic-style sanctuary, constructed after breaking ground in 1940 and dedicated in 1941, stands out for its towering steeple, pointed-arch stained glass windows, and traditional stone masonry-a fine example of late Gothic ecclesiastical architecture in Madison’s Mansion Hill Historic District.

Walking up to the church, visitors are immediately struck by both the architectural elegance of the sanctuary and the rich history connected to Halle Steensland, an early philanthropist whose historic Queen Anne–style house now serves as part of the Bethel community. Steensland’s legacy-embodying community-building through bridge‑building and generosity-matches the church’s own long tradition of outreach, including resettling refugees, global mission work, and hosting the internationally known Bethel Bible Series.
