Biserica Sfantul Nicolae Domnesc (Saint Nicholas Princely Church), Iasi
Biserica Sfântul Nicolae Domnesc is one of the oldest Orthodox churches associated with the former Moldavian court. It was founded by Stephen the Great and completed around 1492, becoming closely linked with princely authority and public religious life. Many Moldavian rulers were anointed here, which explains the word “Domnesc,” meaning “princely.”
The church seen today reflects a major restoration carried out between the late 19th and early 20th centuries by French architect André Lecomte du Noüy. Its design follows Moldavian medieval forms, with a tall silhouette, apses, decorative brickwork, ceramic discs, and rows of small niches. These details give visitors a clear view of how religious architecture in Moldavia combined local building traditions with Byzantine influence.
Inside, the church has a calm and solemn atmosphere, with painted walls, an iconostasis, and religious images connected to both medieval devotion and later royal history. It also recalls Metropolitan Dosoftei’s 17th-century printing work, linking the church with Moldavian faith, rulership, and culture.
