Brömme Hat Museum, Nuremberg

Brömme Hat Museum, Nuremberg

The Brömme Hat Museum in Nuremberg, established by Horst Broemme in May 2003, is a tribute to over 125 years of hat-making tradition. Founded on a rich history that began with Johann Broemme's first workshop in 1878, the museum is a family heirloom now in its fourth generation of operation. This small, privately run museum was opened alongside the main house to celebrate the art and craft of hat-making.

Visitors to the Brömme Hat Museum can dive deep into the intricacies of the hat-making process. From selecting materials like hat bodies, trimmings, feathers, and jewelry, to understanding the tools of the trade such as the 'Konformateurs' and 'Formillion' machines, the museum offers a hands-on experience. These machines are pivotal in measuring a visitor’s head shape and creating a perfectly fitting hat mold.

During the museum tours, Horst Broemme himself takes visitors through the steps of traditional hat-making, from processing rabbit fur to the final product. The museum not only showcases various traditional machines and tools used in hat production but also serves as a studio where craftsmen produce all types of classic hats.

Post-tour, the museum offers the opportunity to purchase handmade hats directly. It houses a collection that includes both in-house creations and established brands such as Mayser, Stetson, Akruba, Borsalino, and Wegener. The Brömme Hat Museum also features a millinery and dress shop offering a range of fashionable and practical hats for men and women, reflecting historical influences and contemporary styles.

The Brömme Hat Museum is more than a museum; it is a living workshop and a celebration of hat-making history. It stands as a testament to the Broemme family’s dedication to the craft and their desire to share this passion with the public, ensuring that the art of classic hat-making continues to thrive through generations.

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Despite Nuremberg's storybook appearance, the city's not so distant past is rather dark. Back in 1933, amid the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazis worked really hard to leave their stamp on the city, prettifying it and renovating the architecture in a bid to accommodate their massive rallies and bombastic military parades.

In fact, no other city in Germany is more intertwined with the...  view more

Nuremberg Introduction Walking Tour

The most "German" of all cities in Germany, Nuremberg has witnessed many historic events in its lifetime. Sadly, the first thing immediately associated with Nuremberg is the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazi rallies, and the postwar trials over the Nazi leaders. Indeed, the city was favored by Hitler, who planned to build here a grandiose architectural complex for his party.

The historical center of Nuremberg, Old Town (German: Altstadt) is easily differentiated from other parts of the city. Divided in two by the Pegnitz River, the district represents a complex architectural ensemble with a maze of historical lanes (e.g. Weissgerbergasse) packed with half-timber houses, linked by centuries-old bridges, such as Maxbrücke, and set against the picturesque backdrops of...  view more
