Laufertorturm (Laufer Tower), Nuremberg
The Laufer Tower (Laufertorturm) is a historic fortification located in Nuremberg. It is situated on the northeastern side of the Old Town and is one of the original 128 towers of the city. Built in the 14th century, specifically around 1377, the tower stands approximately 40 meters tall and serves as one of the four distinctive round main towers of Nuremberg's former city fortifications.
Throughout its history, the Laufer Tower has experienced significant events, including severe damage during the Margrave War in 1552. To safeguard against further targeted attacks, the tower was encased in a round casing in 1556, though its original square structure remains preserved within this protective shell.
Historically, the round tower was utilized for various purposes including storage and as a civil defense room. However, it is no longer used as a bunker and currently stands empty. While the tower has undergone several renovations since its initial construction, it retains its historical significance as a monument. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public for internal visits and can only be appreciated from the outside. This restriction adds to its mystique, preserving its integrity as a poignant reminder of Nuremberg's rich medieval heritage.

Nuremberg Introduction Walking Tour
The most "German" of all cities in Germany, Nuremberg has witnessed many historic events in its lifetime. Sadly, the first thing immediately associated with Nuremberg is the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazi rallies, and the postwar trials over the Nazi leaders. Indeed, the city was favored by Hitler, who planned to build here a grandiose architectural complex for his party.
