Burg Frankenberg (Frankenberg Castle), Aachen
Burg Frankenberg dates to the 13th century and was built as a water castle in low, wet ground. It served as the seat of local administrators and focused more on residence and control than on major warfare. Thick walls, a central tower, and water features provided basic protection.
By the 18th century, the castle was no longer used for defense and fell into ruin. It was restored between 1834 and 1838, when Gothic-style elements were added in line with 19th-century Romantic tastes. In 1971, some of these additions were removed to better reflect the original medieval structure.
In recent years, the castle has been used as a public cultural space. After serving as a city museum until 2010, it was adapted for events such as theater performances, concerts, exhibitions, and weddings, including regular productions by Das Da Theater. It is set within a public park that is commonly used for walks, informal gatherings, and local activities.
