Cafe Americain, Amsterdam

Café Americain is a historic grand café set within the Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American, and has been part of the city’s cultural life since the hotel opened in 1902. From the outset, it was conceived as more than a place to eat or drink, functioning instead as a public salon where architecture, conversation, and city life intersected at one of Amsterdam’s busiest squares.

The building, designed by Willem Kromhout and Herman George Jansen and completed between 1900 and 1902, is a striking example of Dutch Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil. Its expressive façades, flowing lines, and decorative detailing reflect contemporary American influences filtered through European design. Inside, the café preserves key Art Deco features introduced during the 1927–1928 expansion by G.J. Rutgers, including stained-glass windows, lofty ceilings, and a large communal reading table. Inspired by the coffeehouse traditions of Vienna and Berlin, the interior was designed to encourage lingering, discussion, and quiet observation.

Long regarded as the oldest grand café in the Netherlands, Café Americain became a central meeting place for artists, writers, and performers, especially in the decades following the Second World War. Its position overlooking Leidseplein continues to attract theater audiences, locals, and visitors alike.

Today, the café balances tradition with contemporary use, serving classic Dutch and international dishes, high tea, and cocktails in a setting that remains closely tied to Amsterdam’s social and cultural rhythm. In recent years, it has also gained international recognition for its preserved elegance, reinforcing its reputation as one of the city’s most visually distinctive cafés.
