Caja General de Ahorros de Canarias (Canary Islands Savings Bank), Santa Cruz de Tenerife

General Savings Bank of the Canary Islands was founded in 1984 when several longstanding local savings banks joined forces to form the first archipelago-wide financial institution. At its peak, it employed over 1,600 staff and operated more than 200 branches across the islands, playing a vital role in local banking and community development.

The former bank's headquarters, completed in 1998 and designed by architects José Ángel Domínguez Añadón, Francisco Artengo Rufino, and Carlos Schwartz Pérez, is an example of modern Canary Islands architecture. Clad in Tindaya stone, the complex of three interlocked buildings features clean lines, symmetric facades, underground parking, and a prominent cultural space known as the CajaCanarias Cultural Space. This space regularly hosts art exhibitions, readings by literary luminaries, and concerts by internationally renowned performers.

In 2012, as part of Spain’s banking sector consolidation efforts, the bank's’ financial operations were integrated into CaixaBank, leading to the transformation of the institution into the CajaCanarias Foundation. Today, the foundation continues the legacy of its banking predecessor by championing regional development: it supports education, cultural projects, environmental initiatives, sports, and social welfare across the Canary Islands.

Inside, you’ll find rotating exhibitions and performances in the cultural space, complemented by outdoor sculptures-some dating back to the bank’s sponsorship of the “International Street Sculpture Exhibition” in the 1970s, featuring works by José Miró and Henry Moore.
