Cankarjevo Nabrezje (Cankarjevo Riverside), Ljubljana (must see)

Cankarjevo Riverside is one of the busiest pedestrian promenades along the Ljubljanica River, running below Castle Hill and linking several important parts of the historic centre. Until 1919, it was known as the Franz Embankment, after Archduke Franz Karl of Austria. Following the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was renamed in honour of the Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar, reflecting the country’s growing cultural and literary identity.

The promenade is lined with cafés, restaurants, and small shops whose terraces extend close to the water. Many remain open during winter, when outdoor heaters and blankets allow visitors to sit beside the river in colder weather. River cruise boats leave from nearby landing points, while seasonal markets, street musicians, and public events regularly bring activity to the embankment.

Several small historic sites are located close to the riverside. Ribji Square contains one of the oldest surviving houses in the historic centre, dating from 1528. Nearby, narrow Ključavničarska Street is known for Jakov Brdar’s unusual bronze installation. Exactly 700 small, expressive bronze faces are set into the central drainage gully of the cobbled surface, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding historic buildings.

Much of the riverfront reflects the work of architect Jože Plečnik, who reshaped the Ljubljanica into a carefully organised public space inspired by classical riverfronts. He introduced stone embankments, broad walkways, staircases leading towards the water, and rows of weeping willows.
