Palaca Kresija (Kresija Palace), Ljubljana

Palača Kresija (Kresija Palace) is a late 19th-century administrative building standing beside the river near the entrance to the old town. It was constructed after the destructive earthquake of 1895 and completed in 1898. Designed by Leopold Theyer, the palace replaced a hospital and school complex that included an early Slovenian-language midwifery school and a surgery school founded in 1753. With Philip Mansion, it forms a gateway to the medieval centre.

The palace was purpose-built for the district administration of the Duchy of Carniola. Its name derives from the German term Kreisamt, meaning district office, which later evolved into the Slovenian name Kresija. The three-storey Neo-Renaissance palace has an inner courtyard, arched windows, a corner tower, and a coat of arms supported by genii by Alojzij Repič. Its irregular plan follows the riverbank.

Today, the building serves both public and cultural functions. It houses municipal offices, a visitor information centre, and Kresija Gallery, which has presented temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, photography, and design since 2000. In 1919, the palace hosted a major Slovenian Impressionist exhibition. Its façade also features busts of Adam Bohorič and Marko Gerbec, plus a plaque marking its secret role in the 1991 independence movement.
