Robbov vodnjak (Robba Fountain), Ljubljana

Robbov vodnjak (Robba Fountain), also known as the Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers, is one of the finest Baroque monuments in Slovenia. Created between 1743 and 1751 by Venetian sculptor Francesco Robba, it was inspired by Bernini and Italian Baroque fountains. Commissioned during the 18th century, the monument reflects the artistic influence of the period and Robba's skill as one of the leading sculptors working in the region.

The fountain features three marble river gods surrounding a tall, three-sided obelisk carved from red Lesno Brdo marble. Although the figures are now widely associated with the Sava, Krka, and Ljubljanica rivers, they were originally conceived as mythological river deities, with the connection to the three Carniolan rivers becoming established through later interpretation. The flowing composition, detailed carving, and dynamic poses demonstrate the elegance of Baroque sculpture.

To protect the original marble monument from weather and pollution, it was moved to the National Gallery of Slovenia in 2006. The fountain in the square today is an exact replica installed the same year, allowing visitors to experience Robba's masterpiece in its historic setting. Standing before the Town Hall, it is a notable example of 18th-century public art.
