Mestni Trg (Town Square), Ljubljana

Mestni trg (Town Square) has been the civic heart of the old town since the Middle Ages and remains one of its best-preserved historic public spaces. For centuries, it served as a centre of local government, trade, markets, and public ceremonies. Many buildings were rebuilt in Renaissance and Baroque styles after the 1511 earthquake. Before the metric system, merchants also used the official Ljubljana ell as a standard measure for cloth.

The square is dominated by the late-15th-century Town Hall, remodelled in the Baroque style between 1717 and 1719. Inside, visitors can still see the original Gothic rib-vaulted entrance hall, while the courtyard features Francesco Robba’s Narcissus Fountain and hosts public exhibitions. In front of the Town Hall stands Robba’s Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers, completed in 1751. Inspired by Bernini’s Roman fountain, its figures represent the Sava, Krka, and Ljubljanica. The original is in the National Gallery, and the square holds a 2006 replica.

The surrounding façades display decorative portals, stone coats of arms, painted details, carved window frames, and wrought-iron balconies. Narrow passageways connect the square with nearby historic streets and the riverside. Cafés, small shops, cultural events, guided tours, and seasonal celebrations continue the square’s long role as a place of public life.
