Carmen de los Martires, Granada

Carmen de los Martires, Granada

Carmen de los Mártires, located in Granada, stands as a testament to historical and horticultural grandeur. Positioned on the southern slopes of Cerro del Mauror, adjacent to the Alhambra complex, this site combines a rich history with breathtaking gardens. Originally an area known as Campo de Ahabul by the Arabs and Campo or Corral de los Cautivos by Christians, it has evolved from its historical past into a sprawling seven-hectare estate, making it the largest of Granada's Carmenes.

The Carmen is centered around a 19th-century palace surrounded by diverse gardens that blend various European garden styles. The French Baroque garden is notably grand, featuring a large pond adorned with a statue of Neptune and bordered by additional statues representing the four seasons. This classical design contrasts with the English-style Palmeras Garden, which hosts a three-tier fountain, irregular hedge squares, and scattered palm trees, offering a more relaxed and naturalistic setting.

Removed in 1960, the Spanish Garden once added to this eclectic mix, while the Paisajista Garden and the enchanting Lake further enhance the estate's allure. The Lake, designed to resemble a natural body of water, is cleverly hidden by vegetation and includes two islets-one a sanctuary for ducks and swans, and the other featuring hedges and a stone jetty adorned with faux medieval ruins.

A unique feature is the Nasrid Patio, constructed in 1944 to mimic traditional Nasrid gardens, and a wood maze linking the various garden areas. This patio pays homage to the Islamic architectural heritage that is so integral to Granada's identity.

Carmen de los Mártires is not just a historical site but also a vantage point offering panoramic views over Granada, the fertile lands of la Vega, and the majestic Sierra Nevada. This blend of historical layers, architectural styles, and horticultural diversity makes Carmen de los Mártires a quintessential reflection of Granada's rich cultural tapestry.

The long Reconquest of Spain finally ended when the Emirate of Granada was ceded by Mohammad XII to the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon...  view more

The Moorish quarter of Albaycín is a world of its own inside Granada. Mainly, this is due to a strong Islamic vibe still present in the area. The city's oldest district was established by Arabs in the 11th century and to date has retained much of its original charm, manifested in the neat maze of narrow Medieval lanes, shady, intimate courtyards and squares, plus a multitude of well-kept,...  view more

Alhambra Walking Tour

One of the first places a tourist wants to visit in Granada is Alhambra, the region’s most iconic sight. By far not a typically Spanish attraction, this enormous fortress encompasses palaces, gardens, courtyards, and is the greatest surviving relic of Andalusia’s 800 years of Moorish rule.
