Angel Barrios Museum, Granada

The Ángel Barrios Museum, located next to the Church of Santa María of Alhambra, offers a very different experience from the grand palaces. The Alhambra Museum itself contains seven halls arranged chronologically, while this small museum focuses on the life and work of Ángel Barrios, a Granada-born composer, guitarist, and artist.

The museum evokes the artistic life of Granada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Barrios lived among friends, artists, and musicians, drawing inspiration from the Alhambra and its surroundings. His guitar is positioned against a wall, recalling how he would rehearse and practice before the medieval walls of the historic mosque baths. A photograph of Barrios in the piano room, along with images of his sister Elena rehearsing in the garden, brings this intimate world to life.

The collection includes musical instruments, paintings, traditional scenes, family objects, photographs, and personal belongings. Expressions associated with Barrios, such as “the right to the landscape” and “Polinario Courtyard,” reflect his deep connection to Granada.

Throughout the museum, objects and artworks are deliberately set against the old Islamic walls. Windows open onto gardens and historic masonry, blurring the boundary between the family home and the surrounding Alamedilla garden.
