Casa Comalat (Comalat House), Barcelona

There is a widespread misconception in Barcelona that Casa Comalat was designed by the great Antoni Gaudí, but even though that's not the case, it is undeniably influenced by his genius. A typically Modernist structure characterized by its absence of sharp lines and lavishly decorated, this "casa" captivates everyone who passes by and is considered one of the finest projects by local architect Salvador Valeri.

Dating back to 1911, it was commissioned by señor Comalat, a well-known moneylender of the time, who desired his residence to reflect his status, much like other members of the bourgeoisie. Interestingly, the building boasts two distinct facades: a formal front and a more playful rear. The front facade showcases a dozen curved stone balconies with intricate wrought-iron railings, while the back facade features striking polychrome ceramics and wooden galleries that add an intriguing touch. In fact, it almost appears as if a pink and turquoise cake descended from the sky, squashing another building beneath it, with its luscious icing dripping down the sides and onto the sidewalk!

Though not open to the public and tucked away from any major road, Casa Comalat is an essential visit for lovers of Modernism; delicious, dreamy, and very photogenic.
