Cave of the Winds, Niagara Falls

Cave of the Winds, Niagara Falls

Once a natural cave nestled behind the thundering Bridal Veil Falls, the original Cave of the Winds was discovered in 1834 and dramatically named Aeolus’s Cave, after the Greek god of winds. Measuring around 130 feet high, 100 feet wide, and 30 feet deep, it became a thrilling site for adventurers of the 19th century. Guided tours began in 1841, accessed via Goat Island and a wooden staircase leading straight into the misty embrace of the cave.

But nature had other plans. A rockfall in 1920 forced the closure of the original cave. When the attraction reopened in 1924, visitors no longer stepped behind the falls-but in front of them-via a series of wooden decks. The cave itself was destroyed permanently by a catastrophic rockfall and subsequent dynamiting in 1954, but the legend lived on.

Today, the Cave of the Winds is a reimagined experience that brings you closer than ever to the raw power of Niagara Falls. Located near the original site on the American side, visitors descend 175 feet by elevator into the Niagara Gorge. From there, a series of redwood decks and platforms-removed each fall to avoid ice damage and reinstalled each spring-lead thrill-seekers to the edge of the Bridal Veil Falls.

The highlight? The aptly named Hurricane Deck, where you’ll stand a mere 20 feet from the crashing falls, facing winds up to 68 mph (109 km/h). Ponchos and non-slip sandals are provided, but let’s be honest-you're going to get soaked. It’s exhilarating, refreshing, and unforgettable.

The Cave of the Winds experience is open seasonally (May to October), with elevator access beginning in April.
