Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Falls

Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Falls (must see)

Journey Behind the Falls is one of Niagara Falls, Ontario’s most iconic attractions, offering a dramatic and mist-filled view from behind the thundering Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Located at the Table Rock Centre and operated year-round by the Niagara Parks Commission, this self-guided experience takes visitors deep into the bedrock-right to the base of the falls.

Originally known as the Scenic Tunnels until 1994, the attraction has been drawing visitors since May 1889. The name change to Journey Behind the Falls more accurately reflects the main highlight: a literal descent via elevator to a network of tunnels and an outdoor observation deck, bringing you face-to-face (and sometimes soaked) with one of the world’s natural wonders.

The two main tunnels, stretching about 46 meters (151 feet) behind the waterfall, end at cave-like portals where visitors can watch the roaring curtain of water cascade just meters in front of them. These passageways, measuring around 2.4 meters (8 feet) wide and 2 meters (7 feet) tall, were originally much closer to the falls-until erosion concerns prompted new, safer tunnels to be constructed in 1944. Today, barricades mark the viewing limits, ensuring safety while still preserving the jaw-dropping effect.

The outdoor observation platform, added in 1951, provides a unique perspective: looking up toward the falls with Horseshoe Falls roaring to the right. Expect to get misted, if not drenched-thankfully, rain ponchos are included with admission.

A major renovation in 2023 enhanced the visitor experience with updated queuing areas and new exhibits, adding a fresh layer of storytelling and engagement to this historic attraction.

Whether you’re after an up-close waterfall encounter or a unique photo opportunity, Journey Behind the Falls delivers an unforgettable-and very splashy-experience.
