Centre Rabelais, Montpellier
The Centre Rabelais, located on Boulevard Sarrail in the heart of Montpellier, is a historic cultural venue that has been a prominent part of the city's artistic scene since its inception. Originally built as the Cinéma Pathé in 1907 by the Bordeaux architect Hector Loubatié, the building stands as the first dedicated cinema in Montpellier, opening its doors on January 6, 1909. The Art-Deco structure, adorned with cut stone garlands and a rooster emblem symbolizing the Pathé brothers, was sculpted by François Acher in 1909. Although the original cinema had a capacity of 900 seats, the modernized Centre Rabelais now offers a more intimate setting with 400 seats spread over 500 square meters.
The cinema, affectionately known as "Le Pathé," operated until 1980 and, after a period of dormancy, was transformed into a multifunctional cultural center by the city of Montpellier. On April 9, 1996, its distinctive facade was classified as a Historic Monument, preserving its architectural significance.
Today, the Centre Rabelais serves as a vibrant meeting place for cultural and artistic events, ranging from film screenings to conferences and workshops. It is renowned for hosting the Agora des Savoirs, a series of free public lectures held every Wednesday from October to June, dedicated to disseminating cultural, scientific, and technical knowledge. The center also offers a variety of classes and activities for all age groups, including theater, painting, music, and dance, fostering creativity and community engagement.
As a vital cultural hub in Montpellier, the Centre Rabelais continues to honor its cinematic roots while embracing a broader mission to promote art, culture, and education within the local community.

Montpellier Introduction Walking Tour
The trouble with living in a pleasant seaside town in the middle ages was pirates. This was especially true for the town of Maguelone on the south shore of present-day France. A settlement more inland was combined with Maguelone under the feudal dynasty of Guilhem in 985. They added a castle and walls and called it Montpellier.
