Chao Anouvong Park, Vientiane

Chao Anouvong Park, Vientiane

Chao Anouvong Park lines the Mekong River and serves as a central gathering space. Established in the early 2010s as part of a riverside redevelopment project, it is named after King Anouvong, a 19th-century ruler known for resisting Siamese control, and features his statue at its centre. The figure, facing the river with an outstretched arm, has become a well-known meeting point and a subtle symbol of national memory.

The park’s layout reflects a flood protection project funded by the South Korean government, which included building a flood wall and transforming former seasonal farmland into public space. Today, wide paths support walking, jogging, and cycling, with shaded spots for river views, while the promenade becomes especially appealing at sunset.

By evening, the atmosphere becomes more animated, with vendors selling snacks and street food alongside nearby market stalls. Each January, the park hosts the Lao Food Festival, featuring over 180 stalls with regional dishes. This shift from daytime calm to evening activity gives the area its rhythm.
