Chapel of St. Archangels Gabriel and Michael, Belgrade

Chapel of St. Archangels Gabriel and Michael, Belgrade

The Chapel of Saints Archangels Michael and Gabriel, situated in Zemun Park in Belgrade, is a remarkable historical and architectural site with deep religious significance. Originally constructed in 1786, it stands on the foundations of a former wooden church, embodying a rich historical lineage. The chapel was notably repurposed as a quarantine facility during times of war, reflecting its multifunctional role in the community.

Architecturally, the chapel is designed in the Baroque style and features a distinct double cross layout and a semicircular apse. In 1840, a two-story bell tower was added, enhancing its structural grandeur. A unique aspect of its design includes special niches that were used to house individuals in strict quarantine, adhering to the Serbian religious architectural traditions.

In 1986, the chapel underwent significant restoration, which included the unveiling of new mural paintings and an iconostasis, revitalizing its interior aesthetic and spiritual ambiance. The chapel also houses several original 19th-century gold-plated icons, crafted by renowned artists Bratoglić Demetrius and Constantine Lekic. These icons add to the chapel’s cultural and artistic value, making it a cherished landmark in Belgrade’s Zemun district.
