Chapelle Sainte Catherine, Marseille

Chapelle Sainte Catherine, Marseille

Chapelle Sainte Catherine, nestled next to Saint-Laurent Church, is an architectural gem dating back to the seventeenth century. Originally constructed in 1604 for the White Penitents, "les Pénitents Blancs," the chapel boasts a unique late Gothic vaulting adorned with liernes and tiercerons, a feature seldom found in Marseille.

Inside, the chapel is a treasure trove of art, showcasing numerous works, including some originating from its neighboring church, Saint-Laurent. Notably, visitors are greeted by a beautiful collection of tapestries as they enter. Though primarily serving as a spiritual sanctuary, Chapelle Sainte Catherine has earned a reputation for hosting classical and choral concerts on special occasions, enriching the cultural landscape of Marseille.

Eglise Saint-Laurent, standing adjacent to the chapel, has a rich history of its own. This Roman-Provincial church was constructed in the 12th century on the very site where the ancient Greek temple dedicated to Apollo once stood. A belfry from the fourteenth century was reconstructed in the seventeenth century, but significant changes occurred in 1668, during the extension of the Saint-Jean fort, resulting in the church facade being damaged. The main entrance to the church now lies on the right side.

Throughout its existence, Eglise Saint-Laurent and its companion, Chapelle Sainte Catherine, have withstood the test of time, including the challenges brought by history, such as the German occupation during World War II. The church's resilience preserved its stunning Roman architecture, crafted from the exquisite pink limestone found in La Couronne, a nearby village along the Riviera.

Marseille's Old Town

Marseille’s Old Town, known as Le Panier—which means “the Basket” in French—is the historic heart of the city and one of the oldest urban settlements in France. Its name likely derives from an old inn called “The Inn of the Basket,” which existed in the 17th century, though the district itself traces its origins back more than 2,600 years.
