Chiesa di San Zaccaria (Church of St. Zachary), Venice

Chiesa di San Zaccaria (Church of St. Zachary), Venice

San Zaccaria is more than just a church; it is a veritable museum showcasing stunning Renaissance architecture. The facade, a testament to the mastery of Mauro Codussi, features remarkable craftsmanship in its central and upper portions. Antonio Gambello, on the other hand, contributed to the design of the lower facade and the interior. While the original structure dates back to the 14th century, with a Gothic influence, the facade's completion in 1515, after Codussi's passing, maintains the harmonious proportions of the predominantly Gothic building.

Once inside, visitors are treated to one of Venice's most prized possessions: Giovanni Bellini's celebrated altarpiece, La Sacra Conversazione, prominently displayed in the left nave. Created in 1505 when Bellini was 75 years old, this masterpiece beautifully reflects his ability to blend the aesthetics of the High Renaissance into his work. It bears a remarkable resemblance to the contemporaneous works of Leonardo da Vinci, sharing a similar time period with the iconic Mona Lisa, rather than echoing Bellini's earlier artistic style.

Moreover, the Cappella di San Tarasio houses exquisite frescoes by renowned Tuscan Renaissance artists Andrea del Castagno (1423-1457) and Francesco da Faenza (circa 1400-1451). Notably, Castagno's frescoes from 1442 are considered among the earliest examples of Renaissance painting in Venice. The chapel's reputation as the "Golden Chapel" stems from the presence of three remarkable Gothic polyptychs attributed to Antonio Vivarini.

Tip:
For a nominal fee, you can explore the ancient chapels and even the submerged 9th-century crypt (remember to wear removable footwear for convenience).
