Church of Saint George, Moscow

The Church of Saint George the Victorious on Pskov Hill is a historic Russian Orthodox church in the former Zaryadye area. A church on the site is first documented in 1462, when it was mentioned as a Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God.

The name “Pskov Hill” is connected with settlers from Pskov who were established in this part of the city in the early sixteenth century. The present church was built in 1657–1658 on the foundations of an earlier religious building. The seventeenth-century structure is a compact, five-domed church characteristic of the period. Its appearance changed substantially in 1818, when a refectory and bell tower were added in a Gothic-influenced style, creating a marked contrast with the older Russian architectural forms of the main building. The church also underwent later repairs and restorations, leaving the complex with elements from several different periods of its architectural history. The church was closed during the Soviet period and was later used for non-religious purposes, including as an exhibition space.

Restoration work was carried out in the 1960s and early 1970s, and the building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1991; regular services subsequently resumed. Today it functions as an active place of worship and survives as one of the historic religious buildings preserved from the old Zaryadye neighborhood despite the extensive redevelopment of the surrounding area.
