Gostiny Dvor Arcade, Moscow

The Gostiny Dvor Arcade is part of the historic Old Gostiny Dvor trading complex rather than a separate monument. Trading facilities existed on the site for centuries: merchants, traditionally known as gosti, could operate shops, store goods, and stay there while conducting business.

The present complex largely developed from 1791 to 1805 according to a Neoclassical design by architect Giacomo Quarenghi, with further reconstruction carried out after the fire of 1812 and additional work completed in the 1820s–1830. The arcades reflect the building's original commercial function. Repeated arches, columns, and covered galleries formed an orderly architectural framework around spaces once occupied by shops and warehouses, while also providing sheltered circulation through the complex. Quarenghi's regular classical composition replaced and reorganized an older trading environment that had developed on the site over previous centuries. Subsequent rebuilding and alterations adapted the complex to changing commercial requirements while preserving much of its characteristic Neoclassical appearance. During a major reconstruction in the 1990s, the large central courtyard was enclosed beneath a transparent roof and transformed into a modern indoor venue.

The historic arcades now surround this covered space, preserving a visible connection with the building's former role as a merchant trading complex. Today, Gostiny Dvor is used for exhibitions, fairs, conferences, cultural programs, and other events, allowing visitors to see its historic architectural elements alongside later adaptations of the interior.
