Church of St. John the Baptist, Lviv

Church of St. John the Baptist, Lviv

Situated at the base of Lviv High Castle and steps from the historic Old Market, the Church of Saint John the Baptist is among the city’s oldest surviving landmarks. Its origins likely date to the mid-13th century, a period reflected in the medieval foundations still visible inside. Although modest in scale, the church stands out through its layered architectural history and long connection to Lviv’s early development. Local legends offer different accounts of its founding-some link it to Prince Lev I and his wife, Constance, while others associate it with the baptism of Prince Danylo Halytskyi-but archaeological research confirms its deep medieval roots.

Over the centuries, the church experienced cycles of deterioration and renewal. A devastating fire in 1527 damaged much of the surrounding city and left its mark on the building as well. Later periods brought abandonment, especially during the Soviet era, when the structure was closed to worship and repurposed for storage and even as a morgue. Restoration efforts in the late 1980s revived the site, and in 1993 it reopened as the Museum of Ancient Lviv Monuments. Religious services resumed in 2009, marking a new chapter in its long story.

Architecturally, the church presents a distinct combination of eras. The core medieval masonry contrasts with an eye-catching Neo-Renaissance revival carried out in 1887 by architect Julian Zachariewicz, who added the striking red-brick façade. Decorative details, including a blind rose window set with majolica tiles, enrich the exterior and underscore its 19th-century transformation.

Inside, visitors encounter both a functioning Ukrainian Greek Catholic temple and a compact museum dedicated to Lviv’s earliest history. Exhibits include archaeological finds, fragments of centuries-old frescoes, and a detailed 3D model of medieval Lviv, offering an engaging look at the city’s origins within this historic setting.
