Circa 1857, Baton Rouge

Circa 1857 is a shop and cultural space that opened in 2000 inside a building from the 1920s. The structure was once a neighborhood drugstore known as Griffon’s before being renovated for its current use. In 2016, the shop was purchased by Garrett Kemp, who was only 21 at the time. A studio arts student, he had worked there before taking over and later helped reshape it into a more active community space.

Inside, the space is divided into several rooms arranged like small galleries. Visitors can walk through displays of furniture, lighting, and décor from different periods. The collection includes French and English antiques from the mid-1800s, along with vinyl records by Louisiana artists and local pottery. Brick walls and wooden details remain visible, combined with simple modern updates.

In addition to shopping, the venue is used for events and gatherings. An adjacent space known as The Guru hosts private functions, art events, and community activities, including the White Light Night art walk. Plans have also been developing to add a cocktail bar and lounge, expanding how the space is used while keeping its focus on design, history, and local culture.
