Citygarden Sculpture Park, Saint Louis (must see)

Citygarden Sculpture Park is an urban sculpture park that combines contemporary art, landscape architecture, and public space within the Gateway Mall outdoor greenway in downtown St. Louis. Opened in 2009, the park was created by the Gateway Foundation as part of a broader effort to revitalize the downtown area and make world-class art freely accessible to the public.

Covering approximately three acres, it features an open landscape where visitors can experience major works of modern and contemporary sculpture integrated with gardens, water features, and walking paths. A renovation completed in May 2024 unified the park into a single continuous greenway by incorporating a section of Ninth Street, which had previously divided its two halves. The park displays 29 large-scale sculptures by internationally recognized artists, including Fernando Botero, Aristide Maillol, Igor Mitoraj, Jaume Plensa, Mark di Suvero, Niki de Saint Phalle, Keith Haring, Jim Dine, and Yoshitomo Nara. Rather than grouping the artworks in a traditional museum setting, each sculpture is carefully positioned within the landscape to encourage exploration from different viewpoints. Native and ornamental plantings, limestone and granite terraces, reflecting pools, fountains, and a winding stream create a setting that changes throughout the seasons, while interactive water features provide additional activity during warmer months.

Citygarden is open year-round and serves as both an outdoor gallery and a public gathering space. Benches, shaded seating areas, and pedestrian pathways encourage visitors to pause among the sculptures or continue exploring the surrounding district on foot. The park also hosts seasonal events, educational programs, guided tours, and temporary art activities that introduce visitors to the artists and the ideas behind their work. By combining landscape design, public art, and open green space, Citygarden offers an accessible way to experience contemporary sculpture in an outdoor setting.
