Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse, Saint Louis

Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse, Saint Louis

The Thomas F. Eagleton United States Courthouse is a monumental building and is considered to be one of the most important federal buildings in the United States. Named after the late U.S. Senator Thomas F. Eagleton, it serves as the main office of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Completed in the year 2000, the Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse is the largest single courthouse in the United States, covering an impressive 987,775 square feet (91,767.3 m2) and towering over the city's skyline with a height of 557 feet (170 m). In fact, it is the fifth tallest habitable building in Missouri. The building was designed by a collaboration between Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum and EDM Incorporated, and cost a staggering $186 million to build.

The exterior of the courthouse is designed following a classical tripartite scheme that uses the split-level stacking concept. The façade of the building is primarily made of granite, with the columns and cornices made of limestone. The building's grandeur and size are meant to symbolize the importance of justice in society, and it stands as a testament to the United States' commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Inside the courthouse, visitors will find a modern and spacious facility with advanced technology and state-of-the-art amenities. The building includes 29 floors of courtrooms, judges' chambers, administrative offices, and support services. Additionally, the building's public spaces, including the grand lobby and galleries, are designed to be welcoming and accessible to all.
