Co-Cathedral of Saint Peter of the Clerics, Recife

Co-Cathedral of Saint Peter of the Clerics, Recife (must see)

The Co-Cathedral of Saint Peter of the Clerics is a major colonial religious monument, linked to the Brotherhood of Saint Peter of the Clerics, founded in 1700. Construction began in 1728, following a design by Manuel Ferreira Jácome, and the main structure was completed in the mid-18th century. The church later gained the status of co-cathedral within the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife.

The building is especially valued for its Baroque character, with a balanced façade framed by two bell towers and a central section marked by curves, sculptural details, and a niche dedicated to Saint Peter. Its form reflects the religious ambition and artistic skill of the period, when church architecture served not only worship but also public identity and civic prestige.

Inside, visitors will find a richly decorated space, with carved woodwork, gilded details, painted ceilings, and a main altar centred on Saint Peter. The interior brings together Baroque and Rococo elements, creating a strong contrast between the solid exterior and the more elaborate devotional setting within. The pulpit, altarpieces, and sacred images are worth observing closely, as they show the craftsmanship and visual language of 18th-century Catholic art in Brazil.

The church also forms part of a historic ensemble shaped by the open square in front of it and the surrounding colonial houses. The site also has an active cultural role today. Every Tuesday, Terça Negra, or Black Tuesday, brings maracatu, samba, afoxé, and other Afro-Brazilian performances to the area, turning the co-cathedral’s surroundings into a space of memory, identity, and cultural resistance.
