Centro de Design do Recife (Recife Design Center), Recife

The Centro de Design do Recife is integrated into a broader cultural setting shaped by a historic square recognized as Brazilian National Historical Heritage in 1938. This designation preserves its 18th-century layout and original stone pavement. The center operates alongside institutions such as Memorial Luiz Gonzaga and Memorial Chico Science, as well as other cultural spaces focused on music, popular art, and Afro-Brazilian heritage, forming a concentrated cultural environment.

The center plays an active role in connecting design with traditional craftsmanship from the Pernambuco region. It collaborates with artisans linked to Centro de Artesanato de Pernambuco, adapting techniques such as clay modeling, straw weaving, and woodwork into contemporary objects. These activities are often presented through workshops and exhibitions that explore how local materials and skills can support current design practices and small-scale production.

The surrounding square contributes to the center’s atmosphere through regular public events. In the weeks before Carnival, the open space is used for rehearsals and performances by frevo orchestras, maracatu groups, and blocos líricos. At other times, it hosts gatherings focused on Afro-Brazilian culture, including Afoxé groups. Designers also use the central open area, known as the “vão,” for temporary installations that engage directly with the uneven stone surface, linking contemporary work with the historic setting.
