Collegiate Church of St. Kassian, Regensburg

The Collegiate Church of Saint Kassian is a historically significant church that holds the distinction of being the second oldest church in the city, following the collegiate church of the Old Chapel. It is also one of the earliest documented church buildings in Bavaria. Throughout its existence, the church has undergone significant architectural changes, reflecting different periods and styles.

Currently, the interior and the north facade of the church predominantly showcase the rococo style. The church is dedicated to the patron saint, Kassian, who was a martyr. Celebrated on August 13th, Saint Kassian is renowned as the first bishop of the diocese of Säben, located in South Tyrol (now part of the diocese of Bozen-Brixen). Although Saint Kassian's veneration is more prevalent in Northern Italy and South Tyrol, the Collegiate Church of Saint Kassian in Regensburg stands as the northernmost church dedicated to this saint. This unique dedication can be attributed to the city's historical ties to the Patriarchate of Aquileia, which influenced its religious practices.
