Damrong Rachanupab Museum and Library, Bangkok

Damrong Rachanupab Museum and Library are located in a serene area surrounded by trees, amidst the bustling Ratchadamnoen Avenue. Originally known as the Varadis Palace, entering this building feels like stepping back in time. It once served as the residence of Prince Damrong, the son of King Mongkut (Rama IV). Prince Damrong played a significant role in Thai history, particularly during the reign of King Rama V, where he contributed to various aspects of the country. Among his achievements, he spearheaded the construction of Siriraj Hospital and several other notable structures in Bangkok.

The Varadis Palace, designed and built in 1911 by the German architect Karl Dohring, was gifted to Prince Damrong in recognition of his service to the nation. This quaint two-story building is nestled within a beautifully maintained garden. Inside, it consists of several rooms, each with its own unique purpose. The decor on the lower floor has a distinct Chinese influence, featuring Chinese-style furniture, screens, and Chinese deities on the altar. The second floor is similarly divided, with a room displaying old military uniforms, sabers, revolvers, badges, and insignias. Upstairs, you'll find Prince Damrong's personal library and workspace, lined with bookshelves.

Adjacent to the palace, you'll discover the Prince Damrong Library, a three-story building housing a collection of 7,000 books in both English and Thai. The collection includes biographies of historical figures such as Queen Victoria, Napoleon, General Botha, as well as vintage editions of publications like Punch, National Geographic, and the Imperial Gazettes of India. The library's holdings encompass a wide range of topics, including the history of empires, civilizations, revolutions, politics, travel, and even a copy of Rudyard Kipling's "Wee Willie Winkle."

Bangkok Old City Walk

The Thai capital, Bangkok, began life in the 15th century in the fertile delta of the Chao Phraya River as a modest trading post—hardly the megacity you see today. As for the name “Bangkok,” no one agrees on its origin. It may come from the Thai words “bang,” meaning a riverside village, and “ko,” meaning island, which is quite fitting for a place once threaded with canals. Or it...  view more
