Darul Shifa Jama Masjid, Hyderabad
Darul Shifa Jama Masjid is closely tied to one of the earliest civic and welfare complexes of the Qutb Shahi period. It formed part of the Dar-ul-Shifa complex, established in 1595 under Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah as a center for healing, learning, and public service. The complex included a hospital and Unani college offering free care, food, lodging, and student support. The mosque linked spiritual life with healing.
The mosque reflects both original Qutb Shahi planning and later architectural changes. Visitors can observe its arched facade, white twin minarets, and prayer spaces shaped by long use. Older pillars carry calligraphy with “Allah, Muhammad, Ali.” The central dome was added later, showing the mosque’s gradual architectural change.
The site is also important because it survived major political change. After the Mughal conquest of the Golconda kingdom in 1687, many early structures from the founding period were damaged or lost, but this mosque and parts of the Dar-ul-Shifa complex remained. During Muharram, the area becomes a major center for mourning processions. Visitors should dress modestly, stay quiet, and respect prayer times.
