Jama Masjid, Hyderabad

Jama Masjid, Hyderabad (must see)

Jama Masjid is one of the oldest surviving mosques linked to the early Qutb Shahi period. It is associated with Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, and its construction is said to have cost about 200,000 rupees, a major sum for the time. The building process was closely supervised by Malik Aminul Mulk, a prominent noble. For visitors, the mosque offers a quieter view of the old religious and civic life that developed around the early ceremonial core.

The mosque’s design is simple and balanced, with a raised prayer hall, arched openings, and slender minarets that reflect Deccan Islamic architecture. Its stonework, lime-plastered surfaces, and interior Nastaliq calligraphy show the artistic standards of the period. Its Persian inscriptions are valued as fine Deccan scriptwork. The outer premises also contain ruins of an old hammam once used by worshippers, travelers, and students.

Historically, Jama Masjid served as more than a place of prayer. A madrasa and a monastery were once attached to its walls, although these structures have disappeared over time. Their former presence shows that the mosque was also a center for learning, religious instruction, and community life. Merchants, residents, officials, students, and travelers would have used the site as part of the daily rhythm of the old quarter.

Visitors should approach the mosque respectfully, especially during prayer times. Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering prayer areas. Its smaller scale matters historically, as it was the earlier main congregational mosque. In fact, Jama Masjid held that primary title first, making its age, function, and modest proportions worth careful attention.
