Deutsches Architekturmuseum (German Architecture Museum), Frankfurt

Deutsches Architekturmuseum (German Architecture Museum), Frankfurt

Established in 1984, the German Architecture Museum (Deutsches Architekturmuseum) (DAM) has a primary focus on the fields of building and layout technology. Situated along the banks of the River Main, it is a prominent part of the 'Museumsufer' cultural district. Interestingly, from a structural perspective, the DAM is situated within the renovated shell of an 18th-century villa, a project spearheaded by Oswald Mathias Unger, a renowned German architect based in Cologne. Unger's vision involved incorporating a series of elemental platonic structures within the refurbished villa, resulting in a distinctive and unique architectural design.

The museum boasts an extensive collection comprising over 180,000 architectural drawings and 600 architectural models, which includes iconic works by renowned architects such as Erich Mendelsohn, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank O’Gehry. Additionally, the DAM features a permanent exhibition showcasing architectural treasures, offering visitors a comprehensive journey through the history of architecture, spanning from prehistoric huts to contemporary skyscrapers. Moreover, the museum serves as a dynamic exhibition space for temporary programs, presenting both German and international exhibits related to contemporary architecture, architectural history, and urban planning.

A significant feature of the DAM is its substantial library, housing a collection of more than 25,000 reference books and magazines dedicated to architecture. Furthermore, the museum actively engages with younger audiences by organizing programs tailored for children and young adults, which include workshops and guided tours for weekend visitors.

Why You Should Visit:
Informative and well lit, with all info screens in German & English.
What you think of it will depend on the (rotating) exhibit at the time.

Tip:
If you have kids, it is worth taking them to the LEGO construction site (if available).
