Dizengoff Square, Tel Aviv

Dizengoff Square, Tel Aviv

Dizengoff Square, historically known as Dizengoff Circus, is one of the most recognizable public spaces in Tel Aviv. Named after Meir Dizengoff, the square was inaugurated in 1938. Conceived as the traditional centre of the city’s modernist “White City,” it stands out for its simple circular layout surrounded by nearly identical buildings with curving horizontal balconies, reflecting the influence of Bauhaus architecture.

During the 1970s the square was raised above street level to address increasing traffic, but this redesign reduced pedestrian activity. Decades later, the city restored the plaza to Averbuch’s original ground-level design, completing the renovation around the time of the Bauhaus movement’s centenary in 2019. Today the square again functions as a welcoming public space, with lawns, benches, and open walkways that encourage visitors to linger.

At the centre stands the colorful kinetic Fire and Water Fountain created by Yaacov Agam. The sculpture features rotating elements, water jets, and occasional bursts of flame, creating a visual display that has become one of the square’s defining landmarks.

Dizengoff Square remains a lively meeting point for locals and tourists alike. People gather here to relax on the grass, sit on benches, or simply pass through the traffic-free plaza. Cafés and restaurants surround the square, including the nearby La Shuk, known for its seafood dishes and Mediterranean flavors.
