Entoto Raguel Church, Addis Ababa
Entoto Kidus Raguel Church was built by Emperor Menelik II in 1877, when his royal base was on the Entoto hills. Together with the nearby Entoto Maryam Church, it is among the oldest churches linked to the early modern Ethiopian state. The church is dedicated to Archangel Raguel, associated with justice and order in Ethiopian Orthodox belief, and its high setting reflects the area’s early political and religious role.
The church has an octagonal stone structure based on the traditional Ethiopian Orthodox circular design. The exterior is simple, while the interior is covered with hand-painted Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo murals of saints, angels, and biblical scenes. The paintings are clear and colorful, meant to explain religious ideas. The central sanctuary is reserved for priests, and visitors stay in the outer prayer area.
Within the church compound, visitors can see a rock-carved cave church believed to be over 700 years old, no longer used but important for understanding early religious practice. A small museum nearby displays ancient manuscripts, processional crosses, and other church objects. Because of the high elevation and tree cover, the area is cool and quiet. Modest dress is required, shoes must be removed, and most visits take about 30 to 45 minutes.
