Estonian Health Care Museum, Tallinn

The Estonian Health Care Museum, situated in Tallinn, is dedicated to the field of health and healthcare in Estonia. This institution is involved in the acquisition, display, and analysis of items and information related to the healthcare sector within the country.

Established back in 1921, the museum initially showcased an exhibition from 1924 to 1928, featuring a collection of 300 items borrowed from foreign museums. Prior to 1945, the museum was situated in Tartu, and in 1932, a branch was opened in Tallinn. However, in 1945, the museum underwent a transformation into an educational sanitary institution, only to be closed in 1950.

During the period of Soviet occupation in Estonia, the museum was shuttered, and a significant portion of its artifacts met with destruction. It wasn't until 1980 that the museum was revived in Tallinn under the name "Health Museum of the Centre of Sanitary Education of the Republic." However, in 1989, it returned to its original name, the Estonian Health Care Museum, and regained independence as a distinct entity.

Aside from its permanent exhibitions, the museum hosts temporary displays covering various aspects of medical history, medical equipment, aids for individuals with disabilities, and even art exhibitions. On average, the museum organizes approximately 20 exhibitions each year. Beginning in 1990, the museum has also been hosting annual conferences focused on the history of medicine.

Furthermore, the museum maintains close ties with several professional associations, including the Association of Estonian Medical Professionals and the Association of Estonian Junior Doctors, along with other professional groups that reactivated their operations after Estonia regained its independence.
